My path to medicine was unconventional. I hold a BA in Speech and Language Sciences with a Psychology minor, and an MS in Speech-Language Pathology. Despite the “Science” in my master’s title, I never took university-level biology, chemistry, or physics.
The MCAT Dilemma
The thought of taking the MCAT initially held me back. I worried about:
- Needing to take all prerequisite sciences
- Time investment in MCAT preparation
- Uncertainty of success
- Additional costs on prep materials and courses
Finding An Alternative Path
Then I discovered Saint James School of Medicine, which doesn’t require the MCAT for admission. While they offer MCAT-score-based scholarships, many students succeed without ever taking it. Yes, they graduate. Yes, they match into residency!
My Healthcare Foundation
My previous education provided some helpful background, with courses in the following subjects:
- Anatomy and physiology of speech production
- Introduction to audiology
- Neurology related to speech-language pathology
- Basic understanding of respiratory physiology
- Head, neck, and trunk musculoskeletal system
The Real Challenge: Learning the Language of Science
My biggest hurdle? Learning scientific terminology. During my first courses (histology, physiology, and biochemistry), I faced new vocabulary and concepts:
- Chemical terms like “phosphorylation”
- Enzyme names ending in “-ase”
- Complex biological processes
Early in biochemistry, I constantly searched for basic term definitions just to understand lectures. However, by mid-term, this new language became more familiar.
Can You Succeed Without a Science Background?
Yes! But remember:
- Expect to spend extra time learning basic scientific terminology
- Be prepared for additional work compared to peers with science backgrounds
- Maintain dedication and persistence!
Looking Ahead
Watch for my future post about assessing if you’re ready for medical school without a science background!
