Good news about medical school acceptances comes quickly at SJSM! Let me walk you through my experience and the steps that follow.
Timeline
- February 26, 2022: Submitted online application
- March 3, 2022: Received offer of admission email from admissions advisor
This quick turnaround seems typical among my classmates. The relief of knowing your status so quickly is incredible!
Key Steps After Acceptance
Once accepted, there are three main decisions to make:
1. Choosing Your Start Date
SJSM offers three entry points throughout the year:
- January
- May
- September
I chose the September term since I needed time to:
- Wrap up my Speech-Language Pathologist position
- Relocate from British Columbia to Ontario
- Secure Housing
- Arrange tuition funding
2. Selecting Your Campus
I chose the Anguilla campus for two main reasons:
- Safety: A Canadian SJSM graduate who had experienced both campuses shared that Anguilla’s smaller size made her feel very secure – important for me as a woman traveling alone
- Community: The small-town atmosphere appealed to my preference for close-knit communities
Note: The Anguilla campus is closing at the end of the calendar year of 2024 as SJSM has built a new state-of-the-art facility at the campus in St. Vincent of the Grenadines. This island has also had great reviews from students and offers beautiful Caribbean surroundings!
3. Securing Your Spot
The final step involves:
- Accepting the offer of admission online
- Paying a $1,000 seat deposit (applied to first term’s tuition, but likely non-refundable if you don’t attend)
Total Application Costs
The entire process from application to acceptance totals $1075 USD. This is quite reasonable, especially considering there is no required added cost of preparing for and taking the MCAT.
