The process between completing your medical school interview, and receiving a response from the SJSM Admissions team is prompt, just as the response after submitting the initial application. In this post I’m going to combine the steps of confirming your acceptance and enrolling in the program!
As I mentioned in my previous post, on Saturday February 26, 2022 I completed and submitted my online interview to the SJSM admissions team. On Thursday February 3rd I received an email from my admissions advisor offering my acceptance to the program! In speaking with my current classmates, this sounds like a typical time-interval between submitting the interview and receiving an offer of admissions. I can’t explain how stress-relieving it is to be able to know that quickly whether or not you are accepted to medical school.
The main steps that I was required to complete next were:
- Confirming which term I wanted to begin my studies
- Confirming which campus I wanted to attend
- Accept the offer online and pay a fee to hold my place
SJSM has three different entry points in the calendar year to begin your studies: January, May, and September. Given that I was still working full-time as a medical Speech-Language Pathologist at the time that I received acceptance, and knew I still needed to move back to Ontario from British Columbia, find housing, and figure out my funding for tuition, I decided to enrol for the September/fall term.
I opted to attend the Anguilla campus for a couple of non-critical reasons. Firstly, I had spoken with a fellow Canadian who graduated from SJSM and had attended both the Anguilla campus and the St. Vincent campus, and she explained that Anguilla is a smaller island and she felt very safe here. Being a single woman, coming to a brand new country alone, I figured it was smart to choose a campus where another student felt safe. The other reason was that Anguilla is a small place/community, and being someone who prefers small-town living versus a larger urban metropolis, this sounded appealing to me. However, in speaking with a few students who attend the St. Vincent campus, I have heard very positive things about that island, and it does look like a beautiful, tropical Caribbean island!
The last step I needed to complete as soon as I received my offer of admission was accepting my offer of admission online and paying a fee of $1000 to hold my seat for the Fall 2022 term! This $1000 is applied to your tuition for the first term, however, if you decide not to attend the school, I believe this fee is non-refundable.
The fees in total from application to accepting your offer are $1075 USD – not too shabby!! Especially considering you are not required to take the MCAT, and spend money on that exam and any formal education preparation you would require to do so.
In my next post I’ll explain the rest of the enrolment process.
